What stinks is that we should expect a great game between these teams because all facets are firing on all cylinders. In other words, we’d get a pretty good game. It probably would take somewhere between 28 and 35. Meanwhile, Maye would have to perform some Herculean feats - and the Tar Heels probably would need to have top receiver Josh Downs back from injury - to put up points on Iowa’s defense, but Maye wouldn’t need to find a way to put up 50 to win. In other words, North Carolina’s defense is so bad that Iowa’s offense could actually move the ball against it, but Iowa’s offense is so inept that the Tar Heels would get what we consider a normal number of stops. I think if these teams played one another that their inadequacies might cancel one another out and we’d get an entertaining clash between their capable sides of the ball. The Tar Heels won 63-61 thanks to an offense that averaged 6.5 yards a carry and quarterback Drake Maye throwing for four touchdowns and running for another.
Meanwhile, North Carolina’s defense allowed 40 points against Appalachian State - in the fourth quarter alone. Fortunately, Iowa’s defense scored four points in the strangest 7-3 score ever compiled. For those who didn’t have the pleasure of having these two teams on simultaneously Saturday - I did, because I’m a sicko - Iowa’s offense put up three points against South Dakota State.
